About this workshop

Art as Meditation is a small, welcoming group for adults who want a little more calm and presence in their week. Through intuitive art-making and guided reflection, you'll practice slowing down and noticing what's happening in the moment.

You don't need to consider yourself an artist or have any meditation experience. The art is a way in, not a performance. Each week offers a new invitation to create, reflect and connect with the people around you.

These are wellness workshops led by a Create Balance art therapist. They're not therapy sessions.

What a session looks like

  1. Arrive and settle

A few quiet minutes to transition from the day and arrive in the room.

  2. Guided reflection

A short guided moment to focus attention and set an intention for the session.

  3. Intuitive art-making

Time to create with open-ended materials, following what feels right rather than a plan.

  4. Reflect and share

An optional chance to share what came up, with no pressure to talk.

Why art can be a practice in presence

Slows you down

Making art asks for your attention, which gives a busy mind something gentle to focus on.

Quiets the inner critic

Intuitive art isn't about getting it right, which makes room to let go of judgment.

Offers real connection

Creating alongside others is a simple way to feel less alone, offline and in person.

Builds a habit

Five weeks is enough time to start carrying a calmer practice into the rest of your week.

Common questions

Do I need art or meditation experience?

No. The workshop is designed for beginners. You'll be guided through each session, and there's no right way to make the art.

Do I have to share what I make?

No. Sharing is always optional.

What should I bring or wear?

Just yourself. All materials are provided. Wear clothes that can get a little messy.

Can I drop in for one session?

No. Registration is for the full 5-week series, so the group can build on each week together.

Is this therapy?

No. Art as Meditation is a wellness workshop led by a Create Balance art therapist, not a therapy session. If you're looking for one-on-one support, you can schedule a free consultation with our team.

How much does it cost?

$210 for Hinsdale residents and $250 for non-residents for the 5-week series. Registration is through Hinsdale Parks & Recreation.
